Overview

Centre for international collaboration has been formed after becoming a deemed-to-be-university with the following objectives.

  • To foster international collaboration with reputed universities, institutions abroad for joint research, projects, faculty and student exchange, joint workshops and seminars, joint programs.
  • Developing and strengthening collaborative agreements between the institute and foreign universities, research organizations, industries and government agencies.
  • Share international best practicesTo foster high impact research through international partnerships that advances the boundaries of knowledge and contributes to the betterment of society worldwide.
  • To provide high quality international educational experience to students through student exchange programs.
  • Participating in international projects and include researchers from low income countries in relevant projects.

Dr.R.Rajendran Professor Mechanical Engineering is currently involved in the research work on wear studies of biomaterials with Dr Tom Joyce School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering Newcastle University Newcastle UK (Hip joints) and Dr Artemis Stamboulis University of Birmingham School of Metallurgy and Materials Birmingham, UK (dental materials)

INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

Dr. Raj Rajendran – Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, B.S. Abdur Rahman Institute received SAE Ralph Teetor Education Award from SAE International Detroit, USA in April 2011 at SAE Awards Ceremonyfor his contribution to teaching and curriculum development, research, including grants, independent research and professional development and publications related to SAE mobility interests.

As part of Teetor tour he visited GM R & D technical center.

He also volunteered SAE International Jet toy Olympics and SAE International Fuel Cell Olympics. Also visited Wayne State University and Georgia Tech university.

Taiwan higher Education delegation Visit to BSAIST on 06th September 2013

Mr. P. N. Vaidyanathan, Assistant Vice President, Research and Commercialization, University of Central Florida, USA, visited BSAIST on 18th December, 2013 and interacted with Vice Chancellor, Deans, Directors, HoDs and Faculty, towards identifying joint areas of research between University of Central Florida, USA and BSAIST, joint PhD supervision, facilitating the visit of faculty from University of Central Florida to BSAIST on short term teaching assignment, exploring research visits of faculty, students and scholars of BSAIST to University of Central Florida, USA.

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY, AUSTRALIA

Dr. S. Prince Arockia Doss, Director, International Collaboration, BSAIST, interacted with Prof. Rajiv Khosla and Dr. Chu from La Trobe University, Australia, with their “Partner-Type-Personal-Robot” (PaPeRo). Prof. Rajiv Khosla evinced keen interest in exploring academic partnerships with BSAIST. Dr. S. Prince Arockia Doss, Director, International Collaboration, also interacted with the new Australian Consul General to South India Mr. Sean Kelly. Australian Consul General evinced keen interest in improving international academic interaction between Australian Universities and BSAIST.

VISIT OF MR. MIKE NITHAVRIANAKIS, FORMER BRITISH DEPUTY HIGH . VITO FERRO, UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

Prof. Vito Ferro, Deputy Director, Biotechnology Program, School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, University of Queensland, Australia, visited BSAIST on 09th January, 2014 and interacted with Dean and Faculty of School of Life Science.

Dr. Vito Ferro briefed about the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences and Queensland University in Australia and shared his field of research work on Anti-Cancer and Anti-Angiogenic property of a new Heparan sulphate mimetic compound and pharmacological chaperone therapy for lysosomal storage diseases and discussed the possibility of collaboration between school of life science at BSAIST and University of Queensland, on the exchange of faculty and students, joint research and joint programs.

VISIT OF MR. MIKE NITHAVRIANAKIS, FORMER BRITISH DEPUTY HIGH COMMISSIONER, BRITISH DEPUTY HIGH COMMISSION, CHENNAI

Mr. Mike Nithavrianakis, Former British Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission, Chennai visited BSAIST on 13th February, 2014 and interacted with Chairman Mr. Abdul Qadir, Vice Chancellor Prof. J.A.K. Tareen, Registrar Dr. Murugesan, Director Admissions Mr. V.N.A. Jalal, Deans, Directors and HoDs towards establishing partnership with leading British University groups like Russel Group Universities, Sterling Group Universities and other leading Universities.

The deliberations brought out following points for active consideration and implementation:

  • Involving PG students in commercially viable PG projects – which could form a common platform for expertise sharing with universities of similar interest
  • Identifying great talents in teachers and students and linking them with great resources of UK partners for joint research, projects and publications
  • Exploiting bottom up and top down approaches in establishing partnerships at faculty-to-faculty level and institution-to-institution level
  • Strengthening areas of international competitiveness – identifying focus areas
  • Taking collaboration initiatives in an incremental mode, collectively and consistently by all the members of the University
  • Hosting UK University delegations, like sterling group Universities at BSAIST through British council, planning well ahead of time
  • Making a delegation level visit to UK Universities
  • European Union Projects: Identifying funding options through EU Horizon 2020, the EU Frame work for research and Innovation (2014 – 2020). Identifying EU Horizon 2020 funding to non EU partners, and working through applicable grants.

VISIT OF FLINDERS UNIVERSITY DELEGATION, AUSTRALIA

Dr. Gunther Andersson, Associate Professor in Physics, Chemical Physics and Nanotechnology and Tanya Clarke, Country Manager, Flinders University, Australia, visited BSAIST, on 27th March, 2014 and interacted with professors carrying out research in Nanotechnology from Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Polymer Nanotechnology and visited the labs at Polymer Nanotechnology Centre, Physics and Chemistry Departments and explored joint research collaboration opportunities.

Oakland University, USA

Professor.Vijayan Sukumaran, from Oakland University, USA visited BSAIST under Fulbright Specialist program, Obama-Singh 21st century knowledge initiative for three weeks in June 2012 and interacted with faculty and students of school of computer and information sciences.

VISIT OF AUSTRALIAN DELEGATION: AUSTRALIAN ENDEAVOR SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMS

Australian Consul General to South India, Mr. H E Sean Kelly, Trade Commissioner and Consul Commercial, Australian Trade Commission, Australian Consulate General, Mr. Michael Carter, Counselor, Australian Education International, Mr. Peter Nolan, Representatives from Department of Australian Immigration, Australian Alumni, Australian University Representatives and Australian State Government representatives visited BSAIST on 25th June, 2014.

The team made a presentation on “Australian Endeavour Scholarship Awards and other Australian Research Scholarship Programs” to the Faculty, Students and Researchers of BSAIST. Deans, Directors, HoDs, and faculty members with Students and Research Scholars attended the program and interacted with Australian delegation.

OMAN DELEGATION VISIT

Dr. Juma S AL Ghailani, Board Member and Managing Director, Founder and Board Member of Bayan College, Oman along with Mr. Abdul Rahman Juma Saleh Al-Ghailani, Manager Planning and Development and Prof. Dr. Nasir Ahmad Khan, Head – Quality Assurance Department, Mazoon University College, Oman visited BSAIST on 13th October 2014 and interact with Prof. J. A. K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor, Dr. R. Raja Prabu, Dean (Academic Research), Dr. K. M. Mehata, Dean School of Computer, Information and Mathematical Sciences, and Dr. S. Prince Arockia Doss, Director, International Collaboration to explore partnership initiatives between BSAIST and Mazoon University College, Oman.

MR. MICHAEL JOSEPH CUNEO, JOHNS HOPKINS CAREY BUSINESS SCHOOL VISITED BSAIST

Mr. Michael Joseph Cuneo, from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, Johns Hopkins University, USA visited BSAIST on 27th November, 2014 and interacted with Prof. J. A. K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor, Dr. S. Prince Arockia Doss, Director, International Collaboration and with Dean, Students and Faculty at Crescent Business School.

The discussion and interaction brought themes of common interest including experiential learning, case competitions, innovation of humanity program among others and to explore semester abroad program for Crescent business school students at Carey Business school, encouraging Carey Business school students and faculty to visit BSAIST for their India specific projects and inviting Johns Hopkins Carey Business School faculty to teach BSAIST students for a short duration. A joint research project is already in progress between Johns Hopkins University and the School of life science of B. S. Abdur Rahman Institute.

VISIT OF PROF. JULIAN DEMONDY, DIRECTOR, INTERNATIONAL, UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

Prof. Julian Demondy, Associate Dean (Internationalization) Science, Engineering and Technology, University of Tasmania, Australia, along with Mr. Vignesh Vijay, Country Manager (India) Student Recruitment (International) visited BSAIST on 09th February, 2015 and interacted with Prof. J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor and Dr. S. Prince Arockia Doss, Director, International Collaboration. Integrated master program and short-term students and faculty visits were identified as areas of future partnership.

VISIT OF MR. GERARD MAC MICHAEL, HEAD OF SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, GALWAY-MAYO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY-GMIT, IRELAND

Mr. Gerard Mac Michael, Head of School of Engineering and Dr. Vikash Agarwal, Director, Gateway Abroad Consultants for Higher Education and Mr. Srinivas Sambandam, Managing Director, Galaxy Educational Consultants visited BSAIST on 10th February 2015.

He interacted with Prof. J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor, Dr. S. Prince Arockia Doss, Director, International Collaboration. Mr. Gerard visited the facilities and laboratory infrastructure at school of Mechanical Sciences and interacted with senior professors and HoDs.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS, IUPUI, USA, STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM AT BSAIST

A delegation of students and faculty from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, IUPUI, USA, visited B. S. Abdur Rahman Institute for a study abroad program starting from 15th March 2015 to 19th March 2015 to learn best practices in teaching and research at the computer science and computer applications department of BSAIST, the team attended a lecture session at the institute and interacted with the students and faculty at the School of Computer, Information and Mathematical Sciences. The team visited the Apple iOS Application Centre at the institute and learnt about ongoing Apple iOS Application Software Programs.

Prof. J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor, BSAIST, interacted with the IUPUI delegation and gave the overview of international engagement opportunities available for IUPUI students and faculty at BSAIST in the areas of joint research, in all the discipline of Engineering, Information Technology, Life Science, Business Management and Architecture.

A letter of intent between Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, IUPUI, USA and B.S. Abdur Rahman Institute, Chennai, India has been exchanged on 16th March 2015 towards promoting students and faculty exchanges, joint research and study abroad program between the two universities.

International Expert Lecture Series

Professor Prasad Yarlagadda’s Visit

Professor Prasad KDV Yarlagadda, Professor, Smart Systems and Director, Future Airports, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, visited our institute on 23rd January, 2013 and delivered a set of three lectures under the following titles. Professor Prasad Yarlagadda’s visit to our institute is the result of the interaction happened during Australian Technical University Network – delegation’s visit to Chennai last year, facilitated by Australian Consulate General.

The presentations on “A multi-Disciplinary approach for the design and management of Airport Terminals- a Case Study: Airports of the Future – Research”, “Fracture Fixation for Orthopedic Applications – Our Research Approach and Proposed Solutions and overview of Smart Systems” and “Science and engineering Research at Queensland University of Technology- Possible Collaborative opportunities” to students and faculty of the institute was very interactive and useful and Professor Prasad KDV Yarlagadda agreed to facilitate further student and faculty exchanges between Queensland University of Technology and BSAIST and further agreed to identify potential joint research projects.

24th January: UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE: Visit of Prof. Abbas Rajabifard

Professor Abbas Rajabifard, Head of the Department, Department of Infrastructure Engineering and Director, Centre for Spatial Data, Infrastructure and Land Administration, The University of Melbourne, Australia, visited our institute and held discussions with our top management and faculty and students of our Civil Engineering department and expressed interest to collaborate with our institute in common areas of interest between our two universities.

Special Lecture by Prof. Bruce Lawrence, Duke University, USA

Prof. Bruce Lawrence from Duke University, USA delivered a special lecture to the students of Islamic Studies on 20th February 2013 and expressed his interest in establishing faculty and student exchange programmes with the School of Islamic Studies of BSAIST and School of Religious Studies of Duke University, USA

Technical Lecture by Prof.SYED ISLAM , CURTIN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AUSTRALIA

Professor Syed Islam, PhD, FIEAust, FIET, SMIEEE John Curtin Distinguished Professor of Electrical Power Engineering and Director, Centre for Smart Grid and Sustainable Power Systems Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering & Dean International, Faculty of Science & Engineering Curtin University of Technology, Australia, visited BSAIST on 8th October 2013 and interacted with Vice Chancellor, Prof.J.A.K Tareen, Deans , Directors and HODs on research collaborations, student and faculty exchange programs between Curtin University and BSAIST.

Professor Syed Islam delivered a technical lecture on “Smart Grids and Sustainable Power Systems” to the students of M.Tech , Power system Engineering and power Electronics and drives, with special focus on “ Distribution Transformer Life Optimization in a Smart Feeder Embedded with Photovoltaic Power Generation”

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT LECTURE BY DR. M. AROCKIASAMY, FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY, USA

Dr. M. Arockiasamy, Professor and Director, Center for Infrastructure and Constructed Facilities Subject Matter Expert, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering, Florida Atlantic University, USA, visited BSAIST on 17th December, 2013 and delivered a special lecture on “Marine Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Sustainability” to the Post Graduate Students and Faculty of School of Infrastructure. Prof. Arockiasamy held detailed discussion with Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Deans and Directors on establishing international academic partnership between Florida Atlantic University, USA and B. S. Abdur Rahman Institute on joint research, student and faculty exchanges.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT LECTURE ON CARBON ACCOUNTING, CARBON TRAINING INTERNATIONAL, AUSTRALIA

Mr. Robert Nicholls, Managing Director, Carbon Training International, Sydney, Australia, and Mr. Glenn Davidson, Director, Learning & Program Delivery, Carbon Training International, Australia, visited BSAIST on 31st January, 2014 and interacted with Vice Chancellor Prof. J. A. K. Tareen and Registrar Dr. Murugesan on offering joint program and study tours on Carbon Accounting. The team delivered a special lecture on “Carbon Foot Print and its significance to Global Warming” to the students of Mechanical Engineering.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT LECTURE BY MR. ADAM BRYERS, CURTIN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AUSTRALIA

Mr. Adam Bryers, from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, visited BSAIST on 06th February, 2014.

He delivered a special lecture on “Innovation in Science and Technology” to the students of Automobile Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering of BSAIST.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT LECTURE BY DR. VANITA MISQUTIA, ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, CHICAGO

Dr. Vanita Misquita, Director Overseas Programs, Illinois Institute of Technology, USA along with Professor Philippe MARC, ENSEA, France and Mr. Sivakumar, IIT Chicago, India, visited BSAIST on 17th February, 2014 and delivered a presentation to the students of BSAIST and had a detailed discussion with our Vice Chancellor on establishing a formal agreement between B. S. Abdur Rahman Institute and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, through identified areas of mutual interest, including Faculty led programs in Architecture, Students and Faculty exchange, Joint research and conferences, IIT – Chicago faculty visit to BSAIST on short term teaching assignments.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT LECTURE BY DR. MIKE JUST, GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH, UK

Dr. Mike Just , Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) and Associate Director of the Interactive and Trustworthy Technologies group at Glasgow Caledonian University of Edinburg, UK, visited BSAIST on 27th February, 2014.

He delivered a special lecture on the title “On the Many Uses of Mobile Device Sensor Data” to the Students and Faculty from School of Computer, Information and Mathematical Sciences.

A presentation on “State Funded Education in Europe” was organized on 11th September, 2014. Students from Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Automobile Engineering participated.

International Events

US CONSULATE PROGRAMS AT BSAU

12th Annual International Education week celebrations of US Department of Education was held at our institute
on 16th November, 2011. Mr.Mathew k Beh, political economic advisor,US Consulate General, Chennai delivered an interactive lecture to students and faculty under the title “ US-India Educational Collaboration over the next decade”

NASA astronaut Ms.Marsha Ivins visited BSAU on 30th April, 2012, and delivered an interactive lecture titled “55 Days in Space: The story of an American Astronaut” to students of BSAU and to the students of neighboring institutions .

Impact

 

The formation of the centre for international collaboration has facilitated collaboration and partnership initiatives of BSAIST with other reputed universities abroad and opens up excellent opportunities for the interaction of faculty and students with their counterparts abroad for joint projects, research, workshops, seminars, exchange of teaching and research experiences and best practices.
